Biography

Margery Prestwich[1] [2]

Margery was born about 1466 (she was married in 1487,[1] so based on her then being aged 21). Her father was known as Prestwiche of Houlme, co Lancaster,[3] so Margery was probably born at Hulme, Lancashire, England.

She was the child of Ellis Prestwich, esq,[1] [2] [3] and his wife, Isabella Tildesley.

She was married to John Chetham[1] [2] of Nuthurst, Lancashire, gent.[3] Their marriage settlement was dated 10 January, 1485.[1] John was the son of Thomas Chetham.[1] [2]

On 10 January, 1487, an Indenture of settlement between Ellis Prestwich, esquire, and Thomas Chetham, gentleman, on the marriage of John Chetham, son and heir of Thomas, and Margery, daughter of Ellis, was written in English.[1]

On 1 February, 1487, John Barton, rector of Middelton, Ralph Gartside, rector of the parish church of St Andrew in Holburn', and Geoffrey Cudworth, leased to Margery, wife of John Chetham and daughter of Ellis Prestwich, all those messuages and lands in Crompton in the tenure of Richard Wolfenden' and Geoffrey Wilde, with a meadow called Birchshaw Wiss Medow now in the tenure of Henry Greffe and Richard Greffe, and all those messuages and lands in Assheworth now in the tenure of Oliver Holt, to hold for term of her life with remainders to John her husband, and his heirs male and to Thomas Chetham, father of John, and his lawful heirs.[2]
